Why We Only Use 100% Organic Cotton for Our "Build" Collection
Silicon Valley has a quiet luxury problem. The people building the most valuable companies in the world wear the cheapest t-shirts available. Not by necessity—by habit. They got used to free conference swag in their twenties and never upgraded. At the Technology Brothers Podcast Network, we think the people building the future deserve better basics. That is why the "Build" Collection uses exclusively 100% organic cotton, sourced with the same rigor we apply to everything else.
What "Organic Cotton" Actually Means
Let us cut through the marketing. Organic cotton is cotton grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified seeds. The soil is maintained through crop rotation and composting rather than chemical fertilizers. The result is a fiber that is inherently softer, more durable, and better for the environment than conventionally grown cotton.
But "organic" alone is not enough. We source our cotton from farms certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which covers not just the growing but the entire supply chain—spinning, dyeing, cutting, and sewing. Every step meets environmental and labor standards.
Why It Feels Different
Pick up a TBPN Build Collection tee and the first thing you notice is the hand feel. Organic cotton fibers are longer and more uniform than conventional cotton, which means the yarn is smoother, the weave is tighter, and the fabric drapes better against your skin.
This is not placebo. The difference is measurable. Our organic cotton fabric has a thread count 40% higher than the standard cotton used in most promotional apparel. That density creates a fabric that is:
- Softer from day one and continues to soften with every wash
- More opaque—no see-through issues, even in white
- More durable—the tighter weave resists pilling and holds its shape longer
- Better at holding dye—colors stay rich and the TBPN logo stays sharp
The "Quiet Luxury" Connection
There is a trend sweeping through the upper echelons of tech culture that fashion writers have dubbed "quiet luxury." It is the idea that truly expensive, high-quality items are recognizable not by logos or branding but by material quality, fit, and craftsmanship. A plain white t-shirt that costs $80 because it is made from the finest cotton, cut on a perfect pattern, and will last five years.
The TBPN Build Collection occupies this space intentionally. The Build Collection tees do not have large logos. The TBPN mark is a small, tonal embroidery on the chest—visible to those who know, invisible to those who do not. The quality speaks through the fabric, the fit, and the feel. Pair a Build Collection tee with our organic cotton hoodie and you have an outfit that looks simple but feels extraordinary.
The Sourcing Story
We visited three farms before selecting our cotton supplier. The one we chose is a family-operated farm in Portugal that has been growing organic cotton for over 30 years. They use rainwater harvesting, solar-powered irrigation, and employ local workers at above-market wages.
Is this more expensive than sourcing from a conventional mill? Significantly. Our cost per garment is roughly 2.5 times what we would pay for a standard cotton tee. We absorb much of that cost, but the retail price does reflect the premium. A Build Collection tee costs more than a generic branded shirt. We think the difference is worth it, and so do the builders who wear them.
The Build Collection Lineup
The current Build Collection includes:
- The Build Tee — Available in White, Black, Heather Gray, and Navy. Unisex sizing XS to 3XL.
- The Build Hoodie — Same organic cotton, heavyweight construction. Available in Black and Gray.
- The Build Short — An organic cotton French terry short for warm-weather building sessions. Available in Black and Stone.
Each piece is designed to work together or separately. The tee layers under the hoodie seamlessly. The shorts pair with either top. The whole collection shares a unified color palette and minimal branding approach.
Care Instructions (They Matter)
Organic cotton rewards good care. Here is how to keep your Build Collection pieces in prime condition:
- Wash cold — Warm water breaks down natural fibers faster
- Skip the dryer — Hang dry or lay flat. The fabric will last twice as long.
- Turn inside out before washing to protect the embroidered logo
- Avoid bleach — The organic dyes respond poorly to harsh chemicals
The Builder Deserves Better
Jordi Hays said it best on a recent episode of the show: "We spend thousands on our tools—laptops, monitors, chairs—and then put on a $5 t-shirt that was made to be thrown away. Something is off." The Build Collection is our answer to that observation.
If you spend your days building things that matter, you deserve to wear things that were built with the same care. Browse the Build Collection at the TBPN Store and feel the difference for yourself. And if you want to pair your Build Collection tee with a TBPN cap and a ceramic mug, we will not stop you. In fact, we encourage it.
