Every piece of merch in the Technology Brothers Podcast Network store has a story. Not a marketing story — a real one. A moment from the show, a joke that landed differently than expected, a phrase that the community grabbed and refused to let go of. The best merch does not just have a logo on it. It carries meaning.

This is the behind-the-scenes look at how some of the most iconic items in the TBPN collection went from a throwaway comment on a livestream to a product that thousands of fans wear, display, and gift to fellow listeners.

The Design Philosophy

Before we get into specific items, it helps to understand the principles that guide every design decision:

  • Reference, don't explain. The best TBPN merch rewards insiders without alienating outsiders. A phrase on a t-shirt should make a listener smile and make a non-listener curious.
  • Quality over quantity. We would rather release four great items per quarter than flood the store with forgettable designs. Every piece should feel worth owning.
  • Wearability first. It does not matter how clever the design is if the shirt fits poorly or the hoodie pills after two washes. We obsess over blanks, printing methods, and materials.

The Origin Story: Flagship Tees

One of the earliest hits came from an episode where John Coogan said something so perfectly timed, so unexpectedly quotable, that the live chat immediately started demanding it on a shirt. We had the design mocked up within 48 hours and listed within a week.

That speed — from moment to merch — became part of our identity. The show creates the culture, and the store captures it in wearable form.

Rejected concepts: We tried a few designs that were too inside-baseball even for superfans. One referenced a bit that lasted about 30 seconds on a single episode. It was hilarious to the 200 people who caught it live, but meaningless to everyone else. The lesson: the best merch references recurring themes, not one-off moments.

The Hoodie That Started a Movement

The TBPN hoodie collection has become a staple for listeners, but the first hoodie almost did not happen. Early feedback suggested that fans wanted t-shirts and stickers — lightweight, affordable items. A hoodie felt like a bigger commitment.

The design process for hoodies is more constrained than for tees. We spent an unusual amount of time on the hat embroidery. Embroidered logos look and feel premium, but they are less forgiving than screen printing. Every curve, every letter, every stitch count matters. The first samples came back slightly off, and we sent them back three times before the embroidery matched our standards.

The result is a hat that gets complimented by people who have never heard of the show. That is the goal: merch so well-made that it transcends the brand and becomes a genuinely great product on its own merits.

Stickers: The Gateway Product

TBPN stickers are the most important product in the store. Not because of revenue — the margins on stickers are modest. But because stickers are how new fans enter the ecosystem.

The psychology is simple: a sticker is low-cost, low-commitment, and high-visibility. Someone buys a sticker pack, puts one on their laptop, and suddenly they are a walking billboard in every coffee shop, coworking space, and airport lounge they visit. Other listeners spot it and connect. Non-listeners get curious and look it up.

We design stickers with this viral loop in mind. Every sticker should be:

  • Visually striking from three feet away
  • Durable enough to survive on a laptop for years
  • Interesting enough that someone asks about it

Some of our sticker designs reference show moments. Others are purely aesthetic — the TBPN logo in different styles and colorways. The variety matters because different fans express their fandom differently.

The Pieces That Almost Were

For every item that makes it to the store, there are five that did not survive the design process. Here are a few concepts that hit the cutting room floor:

  • The prediction scoreboard poster: A t-shirt design tracking every major prediction John and Jordi made, with checkmarks for the ones they got right. The problem: it would need to be updated constantly, and a static design would quickly become outdated.
  • The episode timestamp tee: A shirt featuring the exact timestamp of a legendary show moment. Too niche — only people who watched live that day would understand it.
  • The "I was there" series: Limited items commemorating specific milestone episodes. This concept actually survived and may appear in future drops.
